PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The Hot End Engineer is accountable to establish and maintain processes and procedures to safely operate the batch house and furnaces to meet codes, specifications, and continuously improve the glass making process by eliminating waste, improving safety, reducing cost, increasing capacity and productivity, and improving the product per customer requirements.
Reports to: Newark Plant Technical Leader Span of Control: All manufacturing processes and operations of batch house and furnaces at the plant.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Living the Safety Stand and adhering to the employee safety responsibilities Ensure a safe, clean, and environmentally compliant work environment and build a culture where safety is a priority.
Ensure a clear and effective measurement system is followed and used to drive results; reward and celebrate safe behavior and achievements; ensure accountability of operators following safety procedures.
Ensure that all control plans, work instructions, and other procedures related to the technical operation of the batch house and furnaces are in place to ensure the safety of all employees.
Lead and support safety initiatives and processes to drive towards zero safety incidents.
Develop risk assessments for critical tasks including emergency responses.
Metrics: Safety metrics – RIR, TIRR, risk reduction, job hazard analysis, safe work plans Driving Technical, Process and Quality Improvements Identifying, understanding, and teaching others the Critical Process Characteristics required to provide our customers with a quality product, beginning with the base glass.
Developing and implementing procedures and systems to ensure glass/products consistently meet or exceed customer expectations, including supporting experiments or trials for new and existing products.
Conducting process audits to review Critical Process Variables and implementing sustainable corrective actions for process shifts or upsets.
Understand current manufacturing process capability, drives to reduce variation, and ensures product quality and consistency to improve the overall process and product.
Implementing control charting schemes for Critical product and process variables Developing, evaluating, improving, and implementing control plans and standard work to ensure that all processes and products meet specifications at the lowest cost.
Identifying and eliminating special causes of process variation (troubleshooting).
Analyzing process data, providing feedback, and making recommendations to optimize performance.
Acts as primary plant contact with glass insulation melter network, identify and implement process best practices and improvements.
Coaching, counseling, and training operators in the batch and melter areas.
Establishing safe, efficient, and effective methods for all critical tasks and audit performance.
Partners with maintenance, operations, and other members of technical team to resolve equipment issues and improve equipment reliability.
Demonstrate the ability to develop and meet key milestones, to work and communicate effectively with people at all levels within the organization and to technically contribute to the development of the process solutions.
Identifying and requesting capital funding for equipment, modifications, etc.
Utilize capital execution from inception to completion for process/technical improvements.
Ensures incoming batch raw materials meet specification, partners with Granville on analysis, and communicates with the vendors.
Metrics: Glass related product characteristics and process variables, operational efficiencies – production line uptime and bushing availability, batch system performance metrics, unit cost, and environmental compliance.
Executing Strategy across the organization Set clear and measurable expectations, in line with plant goals; proactively analyzes and manages all relative performance metrics.
Educating primary employees in the glass melting process, process control procedures, autonomous maintenance requirements and emergency response procedures to constantly elevate the capabilities of our employees.
Maintain documentation, tracking, counseling and executing coaching and corrective action when performance issues occur.
Partner with relevant stakeholders to identify and address process improvement opportunities to eliminate waste, enhance safety, reduce cost, increase capacity and productivity, and improve the product.
Use various tools (Lean/Kaizen, Root Cause Analysis, etc.
) to drive improved productivity and plant performance and build a lean culture.
Participate in FI & QM Pillar and support additional TPM activities across the site.
Knowledgeable and can provide technical expertise in Binder & WW area and Pipe furnace.
Coaching, counseling, and training of new engineers, shift supervisors, and early career talent development as part of their individual development plans.
Create an environment where all employees are engaged, empowered, and focused on serving our plant and customers.
Develop relationships with vendors to ensure OC manufactures products that they define as high quality and participate in developing solutions for serving our customers.
Ensure standard processes are defined and in place that reliably provide product meeting customer performance and scheduled expectations.
JOB REQUIREMENTS MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Material Science Engineering, or related discipline A minimum of 3 years progressive technical experience in a manufacturing environment or leadership program; glass batch and melting process experience preferred.
